What’s The Difference Between Damon and Traditional Braces?

Damon braces and traditional braces share some methods for aligning teeth. Both Orthodontic treatments use an archwire and brackets to reposition the teeth into a beautiful smile.

However, Damon Braces use brackets with a door that opens and shuts to hold the archwire directly to the bracket. Traditional braces use rubber or spun wire ties to hold the archwire. Eliminating the need for rubber ties decreases friction on the archwire, allowing more effortless movements of your teeth. This allows for a more gentle biologic movement of the teeth that can ease the correction of crowding. Consequently, treatment times may be shorter.

This “door system” is called passive self-ligation. Specially designed wires complete the system in the Damon Ultima system.

Pros and Cons of Self-Ligating Braces Vs. Traditional Braces

Damon braces offer many other benefits besides decreasing friction as your teeth adjust. Patients love that they…

  • Are more comfortable – Smaller, sleeker brackets make Damon braces easier to wear than traditional braces.
  • Are faster and require fewer appointments – Damon braces use a self-ligating system. Your archwire adjusts as your teeth adjust, allowing you to spend less time at appointments.
  • Are less noticeable – While still visible, smaller brackets used in the Damon method allow you to smile with less obvious braces. Many of our patients choose Damon braces because they are more attractive than traditional braces. Damon braces even offer clear brackets for patients who want discreet treatment.
  • Are easier to clean – Because Damon Braces do not require the use of rubber bands, they reduce plaque build-up. The brackets’ smaller size also makes them easier to clean.

Damon Braces Cost vs Traditional Braces

Damon braces cost between $2800 – $6800. To help your patient afford treatment, we offer flexible payment methods, dental insurance coverage, and options to upgrade your smile without overspending. If you are considering whether or not Damon Braces fits into your lifestyle and budget, discuss this with our Mary Cay Koen Orthodontics team.

Treatment Time: Damon Braces vs Traditional Braces

Damon braces offer the same results as traditional braces but with fewer appointments and an average treatment time of 12-24 months. The Damon System’s easy-glide archwire takes rubber bands out of the equation, adjusting teeth in less time and with less friction.

Every unique smile requires a different length of treatment. During your initial consultation, the team at Mary Cay Koen projects how long you will wear your Damon braces.
